Labor Relations Law in North America
This is the first volume of a set of
comparative guides to labor law in Canada,
the United States, and Mexico. These
guides will describe how each member
country of the North American Agreement
on Labor Cooperation (NAALC) addresses
the six Obligations of the NAALC with
respect to each of the eleven Labor
Principles that the Agreement commits
its signatories to promote. They provide
a concise description, for each member
country, of the particular laws, practices,
and administrative procedures which
relate to each NAALC obligation. In
so doing, their aim is to promote greater
understanding of the legal systems of
each country by providing an accurate
picture of how each works and by facilitating
comparisons between them.
This guide covers basic labor and industrial relations: union organizing, collective bargaining, and the right to strike as set out in Labor Principles 1, 2 and 3 of the NAALC. Subsequent volumes will cover what the NAALC defines as "technical labor standards," contained in Labor Principles 4 to 11. These comparative labor law guides are intended to serve both the specialized interests of labor law practitioners and the general interests of nonpractitioners concerned with the social dimension of expanding trade relations under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
