Rhonda ShirreffLawyer
Heenan Blaikie
Rhonda Shirreff joined Heenan Blaikie in 2001 after articling with the firm. Prior to her legal career, she was a secondary school teacher for 14 years.
Rhonda’s practice is focused exclusively on management-side labour and employment law. She advises public and private sector employers on a diverse range of matters, including employment standards, employment and contractor agreements, rights, accommodation and workers’ compensation. Rhonda is particularly interested in the rapidly developing area of workplace privacy law, especially when it relates to background checks, electronic surveillance and biometrics in the workplace and the transborder flow of employee personal information. She regularly helps employers develop policies and strategies that strike an appropriate balance between employee privacy interests and the employer’s legitimate need to collect, use and disclose information concerning the workplace. As an advocate, Rhonda represents employers at mediations, grievance arbitrations and human rights proceedings, before the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal as well as the Ontario Labour Relations Board and the Canada Industrial Relations Board. Rhonda writes and speaks regularly on issues related to workplace privacy, cross-border employment, human rights and employment standards. She has lectured at Queen’s University Faculty of Law and the Schulich School of Business at York University. She has also taught advanced labour and employment law as a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and the University of Toronto Centre for Industrial Relations. In addition, she is the editor of the Heenan Blaikie Ontario Labour and Employment Newsletter.
